VIRGINIA DAUGHTER KEEPS IT "ALL IN THE FAMILY" WITH NEW WBTS BOOK

Mary and Marty Schaller

Mary and Marty Schaller
Fairfax Chapter member Mary Schaller, well known to Daughters and War Between the States enthusiasts as the author of Papa Was a Boy in Gray and Beloved Enemy, has taken on a new writing partner. Mary and her husband Martin have collaborated on a collection of letters written by Marty’s collateral ancestor Frank Schaller.

Soldiering for Glory: The Civil War Letters of Colonel Frank Schaller, Twenty-Second Mississippi Infantry, published by The University of South Carolina Press, portrays life and culture in the Confederacy as witnessed by a German immigrant eager to find personal success and glory in America.

W. Eric Emerson, author of Sons of Privilege, wrote "This well-annotated and admirably edited collection of Civil War correspondence . . . provides a unique perspective into the lives and values of the CSA officer corps and, as such, makes for fascinating reading."

Mary and Marty recently treated the Mary Custis Lee-17th Virginia Regiment Chapter to a dramatic reading of some of Colonel Schaller’s letters. Dressed in period clothing, they presented highlights of the Colonel's adventures and misadventures during his first year of service in the Confederate Army. Afterwards they answered questions and signed copies of the book, which Chapter members enthusiastically purchased.

The Schallers are available for any UDC Chapter, SCV Camp, MOS&B Chapter, or Civil War Round Table in search of an interesting, informative, and entertaining program. The standard presentation runs 30 minutes but can be adjusted upon request ( mnschaller@verizon.net or P.O. Box 11551, Burke, VA 22009-1551). There is no fee for the performance.
